The Jose Planter is one of the iconic designs emerging from Manos Que Ven, a unique pottery studio in Oaxaca. Potter, Jose Garcia Antonio, was blinded by glaucoma 23 years ago. As he tells it, this was the catalyst that popularized his work throughout the world. With the help of his wife Teresa and their children, Jose continues his work. His pieces are deeply romantic and oftentimes fantastical--a majority of his sculptures depict the face of his wife or the two of them together. An early feminist, Jose has deep admiration for the women in his life as well as for mermaids, flowers, and animals.
